Common Cyber Threats

The internet is full of threats. Understanding how they work is the first step to defending yourself.

1. Phishing

What is it? Phishing is when attackers send fake emails that look like they are from a trusted company (like Netflix, PayPal, or your University).

Goal: To steal your login credentials or credit card info.

Warning Signs:

  • Urgent language ("Act Now!").
  • Spelling mistakes.
  • Strange sender email address.

2. Malware

What is it? "Malicious Software". This includes viruses, worms, and spyware that damage your computer.

How you get it: Downloading cracked games, clicking pop-up ads, or opening strange email attachments.

Prevention: Install a good Antivirus and never download files from untrusted sites.

3. Ransomware

What is it? A specific virus that encrypts (locks) your files. The hacker demands money (crypto) to unlock them.

The Reality: Even if you pay, they often don't unlock your files.

Best Defense: Keep regular backups of your important files on a USB drive or cloud storage.
